....TOP 10 NEW FENCER QUESTIONS....

1. How do I get started, and what do I need for my first lesson?
Arrive at NBS Gym by 6:30 p.m. Thursdays for your first lesson. Wear comfortable workout clothing, flat-soled athletic shoes, and come prepared to have fun!

2. Can my son or daughter learn to fence?
Yes! NBS Gym has a Youth Fencing Program for kids ages 6-14. And moms and dads (and aunts and uncles) are welcome too! We are home to 150+ fencers of all ages and abilities - from the age of 6 to 65, from beginners to nationally ranked fencers.

3. When do I get to use a sword?
New students at the NBS Gym first learn the basics of footwork and generally start bladework with the third lesson. Beginning bladework drills are done with a foil (the first of the Olympic fencing weapons), without an opponent, and under the direct supervision of our coaches. It typically takes a month before a new fencer is ready to fence an actual bout with an opponent.

4. How much does fencing gear cost?
Fencing "starter sets" cost approximately $125-$150 and include a foil, a fencing mask, a leather fencing glove for your weapon hand, an under-arm protector and a protective jacket -- all the gear you need to get started!

5. Where do I buy fencing gear?
There are a variety of companies nationwide that sell fencing equipment. We also place orders on Fridays for a vender in NY that Raleigh Fencers has a discounted rate with. Also, you can go online to www.fencing.net for a comprehensive company listing.

6. How much does fencing cost?
Classes at NBS Gym are inexpensive, check our rates page for updated pricing.

7. How often can I attend class?
Adults: When you first start fencing, you can attend classes on Tuesdays and Sundays. Once you get to the point that you can fence bouts, we also have an advanced drillwork class on Thursdays and open fencing night on Fridays.

Youth: We offer 4 evening youth classes per week, plus 2 daytime slots during the regular school year.

8. Are there fencing tournaments where I can compete?
Yes! There are tournaments around North Carolina on most weekends during the competition season that runs from the fall through the spring. There are also regional and national tournaments. And the Raleigh Fencers love to compete, so you'll always have a group of fellow club members to go with you and cheer you on!

9. Is fencing safe?
Yes! Fencing is a safe sport, provided you wear proper equipment and follow the rules for blade safety. At NBS Gym, we are very safety-conscious.

10. Do you have fencing equipment I can use?
Yes! We have gym-owned fencing equipment you can use until you decide if fencing is for you, though we recommend getting your own gear as soon as possible.
